Camper reviews

"The first time [at camp], I was somewhat new to Scandinavian music and after having the most MAGICAL week at NFF I was completely hooked. NFF has literally been a life-changing experience for me. NFF is not just a place to learn new tunes and dances, but it is also a wonderfully inclusive and warm community which encourages connection across the entire US as well as Scandinavia, and inspires its members to carry on some very special traditional music and dance.”

Our program and more

Evening dance party

Dance

Our dance classes are designed for all levels of dancers. The basics class introduces basic dance practices while teaching body mechanics and skills helpful for all levels of dancers. Swedish and Norwegian classes feature traditional regional dances.

Evening dance parties include mixers, gammaldans (old-time dances), bygdedans (specific village dances), dances taught, and requests.

You don't need to attend camp with a dance partner. We change partners frequently during classes and the dance parties.

We have live music for all classes and dance parties.

Outdoor fiddle class

Music

Our music classes are offered at three levels for fiddle, hardingfele, and nyckelharpa. Singing classes include singing for dance and traditional songs. Classes are generally taught "by ear." The Gammaldans Band is open to all instruments and voices.

Some years we have additional musical offerings such as Norwegian "flat" fiddle, kohorn (cowhorn), kullning (cow calling), or seljefløyte (willow flute).

A limited number of Hardanger fiddles and nyckelharpas are available for loan at camp, with prior arrangement.

Weaving class

Crafts

Every year we offer an afternoon craft class. In recent years, campers have tried their hand at wood carving, wire work, and knitting.

In 2023, campers had the opportunity to weave with rags and paper, recycling materials at the end of one life into a new and useful form. Participants created looms from recycled cardboard or found objects, then used upcycled material like cloth strips, yarn from old sweaters, plastic bags and garden debris.

Meals, lodging and recreation

Geneva Point Center can accommodate vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets. Their popular ice cream shop is open daily from 2 to 10 p.m.

Housing ranges from lakeview bedrooms with a private bath to tent camping with a shower house.

Geneva Point Center has nearly one mile of shoreline along Lake Winnipesaukee. Lifeguards are on duty every morning and afternoon.

Fiddlers

Scholarships

We offer scholarships to enable campers in need of financial assistance to attend camp.

Our aim with our scholarships is to make camp accessible to interested dancers and musicians. We want to grow our community and promote Scandinavian music and dance in local communities.
